The State University of New York at Cortland – also known as SUNY Cortland – is an award-winning college situated in Cortland, New York. The institution offers over 90 undergraduate and graduate programmes, including the largest nationally-accredited teacher education programme on the East Coast.
Accolades for SUNY Cortland include being voted as one of the greenest colleges in the United States, and being named one of the top 100 best values in public colleges (Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine).
Students at SUNY Cortland have the opportunity to expand their horizons during their time studying and can go abroad for part of their course, with host countries ranging from Australia to India. Those thinking about taking part in an overseas programme or internship are supported by Study Abroad Peer Advisors to ensure that they are fully prepared for their experience.
The institution has its own Student Government Association, made up of nine elected students and officers, who act as the voice for students and help to solve any issues and problems on campus. The Student Government funds many of the clubs and organisations available to join, which range from sports to specialist interests, along with volunteering and leadership opportunities.
SUNY Cortland offers a wide range of support services on site to support the needs of students during their time at the institution. These include a confidential counselling centre, information on financial aid, help for those with a disability, and a student health service. There is also a careers service for students to get information on everything from planning their career to writing a stand-out CV and cover letter and finding internship opportunities.
School of Arts and Sciences
The School is home to 18 departments and approximately 2,700 students. It is the largest of SUNY Cortland’s three schools. The variety of opportunities open to students in the School of Arts and Sciences includes students major in subjects covering a wide array of interests, from anthropology to physics, from French to new media design, from adolescence education to geographic information systems. The students will thrive in an atmosphere where learning communities, internships, undergraduate research, service learning and international education are routine expectations.
School of Education
Graduates of SUNY Cortland’s teacher education programme will be prepared to think critically, utilise technology, communicate effectively, understand and value diversity, contribute to their communities, and make a difference in the lives of their students.
SUNY Cortland is home to the largest comprehensive teacher education programme in New York and offers nationally recognised programmes such as the Centre for Fourth and Fifth Rs (Character Education) and innovative programmes such as Cortland’s Urban Recruitment of Educators.
School of Professional Studies
The School of Professional Studies houses six academic departments who are committed to providing the highest quality experiences in teacher preparation in health and physical education and a variety of professional programmes including health; communication disorders and science, and fitness development.
With outstanding and highly respected faculty and scholars, the academic programmes in the School are held in a very high regard throughout New York State, the northeast region, across the country and internationally.
The School seeks to prepare culturally sensitive and competent professionals who will graduate with the knowledge and skills to be effective representatives of positive change for individuals, their communities and the environment.
